STABENOW, LEVIN: APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE APPROVES $2 MILLION IN LABOR, HEALTH CARE, AND EDUCATION FUNDING FOR MICHIGAN. - States News Service

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow:

U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin, both D-Mich., announced today the inclusion of $2 million for nine Michigan projects in the fiscal year 2011 Appropriation bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and related agencies. The funding was approved last week by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

'This funding will make sure that families in Michigan have access to state-of-the-art health care services and educational programs that will give them better job opportunities.' Stabenow said. 'These programs are especially critical for our colleges that are struggling to meet increasing demands for services that will prepare workers for jobs in a new global economy.'

'This funding will bring top-notch health care and educational programs to communities across Michigan,' Levin said. 'The educational investments will help our colleges create opportunities for students, particularly those who are seeking skills for jobs in new industries.'

The bill must be approved by the Senate and a House-Senate conference committee before it is given final approval by Congress. It will then go to President Obama for his signature.

Details of the individual projects can be found below.

Project Name Amount Description

Mott Community College, Flint-Institute for Renewable and Sustainable Energy (IRSE) $250,000 This funding will assist with the cost of purchasing renewable energy equipment and curriculum development for the Institute of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.

Macomb Community College, Warren-Making Displaced Workers College Ready $250,000 This funding will help develop a set of assessment and curriculum materials to help Michigan community colleges serve the needs of adults who wish to take advantage of the State of Michigan's No Worker Left Behind Program.

Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids-Jobs in Energy West Michigan Collaboration $100,000 This funding will aid the purchase of equipment and development of education programs in alternative and renewable energy.

Jackson Community College, Bay de Noc College, and Lake Michigan College, Jackson- Community College Adult Basic Education Consortium $100,000 This funding will provide economic resources to aid the colleges in their efforts to develop assessment tools and curriculum for adult education. The program is designed to allow low-skilled adults to transition to and through post-secondary education.

Lawrence Technological University-Green Jobs Education, Training, and Placement for Displaced Workers $150,000 This funding will expand the university's proven Recovery Starts Here program to educate, train , and provide comprehensive career and placement services to displaced workers.

Delta College, University Center $250,000 This funding will help Delta College purchase digital and electronic instruments to update its Chemical Process and Lithium Battery Lab.

Sparrow Ionia County Memorial Hospital, Lansing $500,000

This funding will help construct a $10 million ambulatory facility, including a diagnostic lab and imaging center. In addition, this facility will create space for up to eight primary and visiting specialty care provider offices, outpatient surgery, an urgent care center, and specialty and rehabilitation clinics.

Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Dearborn-Oakwood Bone and Joint Institute $150,000 This funding will go towards facilities and equipment upgrades to help improve orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation services.

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit-Cancer Institute Gamma Knife Equipment $250,000 This funding will allow the institute to purchase a new Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion. This device revolutionizes brain surgery by attacking brain tumors with precisely targeted beams of radiation instead of scalpel incisions.
