GOV. SNYDER APPOINTS MEMBERS TO AGING, LONG-TERM CARE COMMISSIONS - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 27 -- Gov. Rick Snyder, D-Mich., issued the following press release:

Gov. Rick Snyder today announced appointments to the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging and the Michigan Long-Term Care Supports and Services Advisory Commission.

'These skilled individuals will provide their talents and expertise in health and long-term care. I look forward to their work as we continue to provide our aging and vulnerable Michigan citizens with quality care and service,' Snyder said.

MICHIGAN COMMISSION ON SERVICES TO THE AGING

Shannon English, Jerry Irby, Harold Mast, Jeffrey Schade and Kristie Zamora are appointed.

The commission is a 15-member body appointed by the governor. It advises the governor and Legislature on coordinating and administrating of state programs and priorities that affect Michigan's older citizens. A majority of the members must be at least 60 years of age and no more than eight may be from the same political party.

English, of Big Rapids, is a physician at Advantage Health Saint Mary's Medical Group in Grand Rapids, whose specialties include geriatric medicine. She also serves as a clinical assistant professor for the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and consulting staff member for the Mecosta County Medical Center. English earned bachelor's degrees in biology and philosophy from Lycoming College in Pennsylvania, and a medical degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University (now known as SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse.) She will represent Republicans and replaces Mary Penelope Gardner.

Irby, of Marquette, is retired from the Prudential Insurance Co. He currently serves as a juvenile court diversion mentor for the Marquette County Juvenile Court and as chairman of the Marquette County Aging Services Board. Irby previously served as president of the Marquette Kiwanis Club, as a member of the Marquette County Commission and as mayor of Marquette. He will represent Republicans and replaces Joan Budden.

Mast, of Kentwood, is owner and principal consultant of Harold J. Mast Consulting LLC. He previously served as executive director of Genesis Nonprofit Housing Corp., director of the Residential Program for Persons with Developmental Disabilities and as assistant administrator of facility planning and construction at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. Mast is a Kent County commissioner, a member of the Kent County Veterans Advisory Committee and a member of the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging Senior Advisory Council. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Calvin College and a master's degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa. Mast will represent Republicans and replaces Valerie Lafferty.

Schade, of Midland, is president and CEO of The Peplinkski Group Inc. He previously served as director of operations for the Peplinski Group, administrator of the North Woods Nursing Center and account executive of Liggett Broadcasting Inc. Schade is chairman of the board of directors of the Health Care Association of Michigan and vice chair of the board of directors of the Healthcare Industry Liability Insurance Program. He earned a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and completed the Nursing Home Administrator Program at Michigan State University Eli Broad School of Graduate Studies. Schade will represent Republicans and replaces Thomas Rau.

Zamora, of Flint, is the coordinator of arts, culture and film in the Economic Development and Community Affairs Department for Oakland County. She previously served as coordinator of exhibits, interim curator of education and registrar at Flint Institute of Arts. Zamora earned bachelor's degrees in art history and political science from Kalamazoo College. She will represent Independents and replaces Cheryl Bollinger.

Appointees will serve three-year terms expiring July 28, 2014. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

MICHIGAN LONG-TERM CARE SUPPORTS AND SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION

Karen Messick and Catherine Ramaker are appointed.

The commission provides information, recommendations and advice regarding the state's long-term care services administered through the Department of Community Health.

Messick, of Comstock Park, is the Chief Operating Officer of Pilgrim Manor Inc., a nonprofit health care system for seniors in Grand Rapids. She previously worked with The Mobile Medical Group, Trinity Continuing Care Services and Genesis Critical Home Care Inc. Messick is a licensed nursing home administrator. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Kent State University in Ohio and a master's degree in public and nonprofit administration from Grand Valley State University. Messick will represent providers of Medicaid-funded long-term care supports and services and fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Jon Reardon.

Ramaker, of Midland, provides care for her 94-year-old mother-in-law and has 25 years of experience as a member of the P.

O., an international philanthropic education organization providing grants and loans for women seeking to complete post-secondary education. Ramaker earned a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University. She is a regional representative for the Michigan State Cottey College and Scholarship Committee. Ramker will represent primary or secondary consumers of long-term care supports and services. She will fill a vacancy created by the death of Marsha Moers.

Ramaker will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2013, and Messick will serve a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2014. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
